the greengold STORY

The concept of Greengold was born from the environmental advocacy of Jane Thery, President and CEO of Green Horse Enterprises, LLC. In her research on land stewardship and environmental protection, particularly focusing on horse farms in the mid-Atlantic region, she was advised by conservation specialists to address the issue of horse manure, as well as land use policies and practices. Horses produce about 55 pounds of manure each day. With 100,000 horses in Maryland, this is over 2 billion pounds per year.

Using horses’ readily available “waste,” Greengold transforms manure into a product easily used by consumers in their own homes. The trial batch of Greengold was produced by Jane Thery in the trunk of her car. “I started with a large Tupperware filled with well-composted horse manure. I would position the car so the sun would come into the open trunk, stir the compost, then screen it. I produced about 50 pounds of the test batch of Greengold this way.” The end result is a dry, easily incorporated soil amendment offering a slow-release of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium. Greengold is a subsidiary of Green Horse Enterprises, LLC, a small, women owned, Maryland-based business providing environmental advisory services. Compost drying and screening is done by a local composting company, staffed primarily by veterans. Greengold’s non-plastic packaging is biodegradable and made in the USA.

Compost is that nutrient-filled ‘black gold’ I use to feed all my plants.
— Martha Stewart
The soil needs to be fed... People get the idea that they’re going to be ‘natural,’ and never use fertilizer or manure or anything. They’ll end up tapping out the nutrients of the soil and then nothing will grow. You always need to think of your soil as the crop itself: you have to keep feeding it because it’s alive.
